Icon Tiers
Cartographic (32 icons)
Side-view silhouette glyphs for world and region map points of interest. These appear as small markers beside place-name labels on world maps and as landmark icons on region maps.
Examples: city, town, village, fortress, tower, dungeon, ruins, cave, mountain, forest, volcano
Tactical (151 icons)
Top-down plan-view symbols for grid-based battle maps (1 square = 5 ft). Clean geometric shapes based on architectural floor-plan conventions. A GM should recognize each symbol at a glance.
Categories:
- Furniture -- table, chair, bed, bookcase, chest, barrel, throne, desk, wardrobe
- Terrain -- wall segment, doors (normal, secret, locked), water pool, pit, vegetation, rock
- Hazards -- spike trap, fire trap, poison gas, pressure plate, falling net, alarm glyph
- Lighting -- campfire, arcane_circle, portal

| Stroke | Dark brown (85%) | Near-black (80%) | Light cream (90%) | Dark gray |

Using Icons in Maps
Icons are automatically selected based on the content your map generates:
- World maps use cartographic icons for terrain zones (mountain, forest, desert) and landmark pins
- Region maps use cartographic icons for settlement and POI markers
- Battle maps use tactical icons for furniture, terrain features, and hazards
- Establishment interiors use establishment icons, falling back to tactical icons for shared items

Frequently Asked Questions
What icons are available for battle maps? Battle maps use the 151 tactical tier icons, which include furniture (tables, chairs, beds, thrones), terrain features (water pools, pits, vegetation), structural elements (walls, doors, stairs), traps and hazards (spike traps, pressure plates, poison gas), lighting (campfire, torches), siege weapons (ballista, catapult), and weapons. See the full list in the Tactical Icons section above.
What icons appear on world maps? World maps use the 32 cartographic tier icons, which are side-view silhouette glyphs for terrain features (mountain, forest, volcano, hills, lake) and points of interest (city, town, village, fortress, dungeon, ruins, port, mine).
Can I customize which icons appear on my maps? Icons are automatically selected based on the terrain, biome, and features that your map generates. The system matches terrain types to the appropriate icon from the library.
Do icons look different in print mode? Yes. Every icon adapts to four themes: parchment (warm browns), clean (neutral grays), dark (light cream on dark background), and print (high-contrast black and gray for paper printing). Use the theme toggle in the gallery above to preview all four styles.
What are establishment icons? Establishment icons are specialized variants of tactical icons designed for specific building types like taverns, temples, forges, and stables. They provide purpose-specific symbols (bar counter, forge hearth, shrine altar) instead of generic furniture icons.
Can I request a new icon to be added to the library? Yes! Open the Report an Issue dialog from your account dropdown menu (top-right corner) and describe the icon you need. Include the map type (world, battle, establishment) and what the icon should represent. We review all requests and add popular ones in future updates.
